Running Visuals for a Small Live Show From One Laptop

One laptop, one HDMI cable and the sound already in the room is enough to put visuals behind a band — if you get the signal path and the failure plan right.

The gear is the easy part. What sinks a first attempt at live visuals is usually the boring stuff: the machine sleeping mid-set, a browser throttling the tab you dragged onto the projector, or nobody being able to reach the laptop once the band starts. Here is a setup that survives a real night.

Where the audio comes from

In order of preference:

Whichever you use, BLOOB only listens. Nothing is routed back to the PA, so there is no feedback path and no risk of an accidental noise from the visual machine reaching the room.

The screen

Run the projector or LED wall as a second display and put the browser window on it, then press H to hide the interface — the canvas fills the frame with no controls, no cursor and no browser furniture. Use the Fullscreen toggle in Tune → Studio, and keep the tab in the foreground on that display: browsers throttle background tabs hard, and a throttled tab is the single most common cause of visuals that stutter for no visible reason.

Before doors: turn off sleep, screensaver and any automatic update prompt, close every other tab, and unplug anything you do not need. On a modest machine, auto-performance will lower preview resolution before it reduces scene detail, so it degrades gracefully rather than falling off a cliff — but it is better not to make it work.

Driving it from the room

Remote Director pairs a phone with the laptop over a QR code, which means you do not have to stand behind the machine for the whole set. From the phone you can change scene, hold, black out, and fire a momentary hype hit for a drop. Blackout is the important one: it is the visual equivalent of a mute button, and knowing where it is means a surprise — an unexpected speech, a technical problem, someone's phone number appearing on a shared screen — takes one tap to fix.

A run sheet

  1. Soundcheck. Get the audio source connected and confirm the meters move with the band, not with the air conditioning.
  2. Pick two or three scenes that suit the set, and note their numbers — 19 jump straight to a scene, which is faster than arrowing past six of them in the dark.
  3. Set the mood. Chill for the support act and the room filling up, Signature for most of the night, Hype for the last three songs.
  4. Turn on Flash guard in Tune → Studio if the audience did not buy a ticket to a light show. It caps how deep and how frequent full-frame brightness swings can be, and it applies to whatever is on the screen.
  5. Save a preset for the look you settled on, so a crash costs you thirty seconds instead of the set.
  6. Pair the phone and check blackout works from where you will be standing.
  7. Press H, go fullscreen, and leave the laptop alone.

When it goes wrong

It will, once. The useful failures are predictable. If the picture freezes but audio continues, the tab lost focus — click it and it recovers. If the visuals react to nothing, the browser has switched input device, usually because something was unplugged; reselect it in the microphone prompt. If the machine is thermally throttling, drop the render quality a rung rather than changing scene, because a heavy particle scene at half resolution still looks better than a simple one that stutters. And if you cannot fix it in ten seconds, black out and fix it between songs. An empty screen reads as a choice; a stuttering one reads as a fault.

Small rooms, small budgets

None of this needs a licence, a dongle or an install on a borrowed laptop — which matters when the venue's machine is the only one with a cable to the projector. A browser tab, a QR code and a preset is the whole rig. The same setup covers a church service, a wedding, a school hall or a bar with a spare TV; only the mood setting really changes.
